Cultural Research Project > COTTON

The tapestry is composed of three pieces of double-sided patchwork quilts. Traditionally, patchwork served as a form of communication that replaced language and text. It symbolized the close integration of manual labor and daily life. Through images and colors, patchwork offers the possibility for free interpretation and transmission by others, and the fabrics and decorations used also reflect cultural and temporal significances. The large patchwork quilt in the artwork features the images of cotton, metal frameworks in Kinmen, missiles, and barbed wire, corresponding to color blocks depicting the surrounding maritime areas of Taiwan on the reverse side, as well as a path map of Chinese military aircrafts flying across the median line. The two smaller patchwork quilts showcase imagery related to the garment processing industry and the digital sector, revealing that the pursuit of future and dreams continue to exist between labor and money making, whether in traditional industries or the modern AI era. The decentralized trading of digital virtual currencies and data mining alters the relationship between migrating bodies and land, through which the interplay and balancing acts between globalization, international power, and territorial boundaries, are explored.
